Serving people in need: Veritas has a range of programs that serve the neediest
members of the community. |
||
|
|
Abandoned
children: Veritas staff and volunteers work with abandoned babies
and toddlers in the town hospital, providing them with affection, stimulation
and much of the basic care missing in an institutional environment. Our goal is to promote the children's healthy
development until they can return home or move to a family. Veritas
looks for sponsors who can support a child in foster care and works
with local authorities to facilitate foster placements. |

|
Underprivileged
children: Kids' Club is a program that provides hot meals, education,
moral guidance and enrichment activities to about 200 children from
some of the poorest families in town (mainly gypsy). A preschool group meets at the Family Center
four mornings a week, and the other children each come twice a week
in the afternoons, divided into age groups.
Volunteers provide special interest activities such as music,
sports, arts and crafts, drama and English. Parent groups and regular
home visits help Veritas staff to know each family's situation. Regular shipments of used clothing, household
goods and school supplies from Northern Ireland (made possible by the
registered charity "Project Romania") allow us to help these
families with basic material needs. Designated donations for medicines
and emergency relief allow us to provide assistance
in times of crisis. Summer camps provide many of the children with their
only vacation experiences, rich in outdoor recreational activity, fun
and spiritual teaching. |
The Kids'
Club program and the distribution of material aid take place at the
Family Center, just off Sighisoara's main shopping street; Strada Hermann
Oberth Nr. 25. Tel. Nr. 0265-777252 |

Elderly: An Elderly Club meets five mornings a week, providing a
relaxed atmosphere where seniors can meet together to drink a cup of coffee,
play chess or rummy-o, do a jigsaw puzzle or a craft project, read the daily
newspaper, listen to music, watch a video, participate in a Bible study, have
their blood pressure checked, and once a week enjoy a simple hot lunch. Most
elderly live on extremely low pensions and many have no relatives close
by. Veritas staff visit isolated
elderly who need help with household chores or medical problems, or simply
welcome an encouraging visit. |

People
with special needs: There are currently no services in Sighisoara for the disabled.
Children with a physical or mental disability are often excluded from
public education simply because there are no funds for special services.
Similarly, disabled adults usually have no job prospects and live from
very small pensions. Veritas supports families that have a disabled
child by providing material aid, help in dealing with necessary bureaucracy,
and a support group for parents. A new club program, similar to the
Elderly Club described above, has recently been started on Thursday
afternoons for adults with special needs, with the aim of reducing isolation
and enhancing self-esteem. A future goal is to provide training in marketable
skills and facilitate job placements. Club programs for the elderly and handicapped take place
at the Nazarene Center, Strada St. O. Iosif Nr 20. |
